What is your favorite old-school video game?

Submitted By [info]2hated2care

View 504 Answers

I'm going to have to pick from games that are 'old school' in comparison to today's standards.  I don't really think I'm old enough to know any truly old school games other than Pong and Zelda, to be honest.

So, my favorite game (of all time, actually) is Breath of Fire III, released in 1997/1998 for PSX.  It was my first playstation game ever and I still own it, even though the disc now refuses to work in a playstation console (I have to use a PSX emulator on my PC to use it *facepalm*  ).

However, if you really want to go backwards, my favorite really old game would have to be Mappy... just because.  XD

Since I'm hardly ever around anymore (for lack of fandom-related things to say or just anything interesting in general, really), I've decided to do a little self-made meme of sorts to both entertain myself and hopefully interest my flisters. =]

My favorite book of all time... )

And I think everyone should post a little blurb about their favorite book of all time, why they first read it, etc. =] I'd be interested and it'd be a good way to get book recommendations. =D

Um.  Well.  One time I was at McDonald's with a friend and it was my turn to order.  I was in the process of ordering two crispy chicken ranch wraps when all of a sudden, the girl behind the counter interrupts me with "Are you wearing contacts?"  I look up at her and see that her mouth is hanging open slightly and she's staring at me in awe.

So, I tell her yes, completely confused and a bit chagrined because dammit, I was hungry.

She asks me if they're colored contacts and I say no.

Girl Behind Counter: SRSLY?!

Me: Um.  Yes?  >.>

Girl Behind Counter: OMGOMG.  YOUR EYES ARE SO PRETTY.  I'M SO JEALOUS.

Me: *awkward*  Thank you?

Girl Behind Counter: Yeah.  *stares*

Me: ....  ..... O_O ..... Uh.

Girl Behind Counter:  =O

Me: ...Um, can I order now?

Girl Behind Counter:  Huh?

.....So yes.  That would be the most flattering comment I received, if only because of the... circumstances surrounding it.  *cough*

Apparently I dazzled her.   =]

I know, I know.  I've been out of commission for fucking ages.  I'm so sorry.

Okay, well, honestly- I'm not that sorry.  XD  I simply haven't had much to talk about.

Things I have been doing with my internet time and other things (just so everyone is aware):

A. Reading tons and tons of fanfiction.  Seriously.  The highlights of my day are usually when I get emails telling me that my favorite fics have been updated.  I've always been big on fandom in that way- first with Anne Rice, then with HP, and now with Twilight (and another new fandom that I will mention next).  Fanfiction has always been a big part of my extracurricular life, which I know, makes me a total geek.  Oh well.

In fact, I was contemplating making a list of all my favorite fics here on LJ, to be updated each time I stumble across something new that I love.  If anyone who reads fic (Twilight, mainly) would like me to create a resource post, let me know and I will take it into serious consideration.

B. Becoming obsessed with Cassandra Clare's The Mortal Instruments trilogy.  I've always been a fan of Cassie Claire, honestly.  Plagiarism debacle aside, her HP fic trilogy, The Draco Trilogy, was pivotal in getting me hooked to Harry Potter fanfiction, and for that, I owe her a lot.

Anyway, The Mortal Instruments (TMI) is amazing.  I read the eBooks last week and then promptly ordered the first two books from Barnes and Noble and preordered the third, which comes out next month.  If anyone needs something new to read and has a soft spot for fantasy, I seriously recommend TMI.  I positively adore it.  Cassie's humor is spot on and the world she's created is fascinating and fun to play in.

And to my Twilight flisters, SMeyer herself pretty much TMI the thumbs up, as well:

"The Mortal Instruments series is a story world I love to live in. Beautiful!" --Stephenie Meyer, author of Twilight

"Dear Edward and Jacob, I adore you both, but I'm spending the weekend with Jace. Sorry! Love, Stephenie" --Stephenie Meyer, author of Twilight

(Taken from the reviews for City of Glass on amazon.com)

Seriously, peeps.  Can't recommend TMI enough (not to mention that Jace=*drools*).  Which reminds me- [info]cloudy_dreams9 , you know what is expected of you as soon as your internet is alive again.  *eyeballs*  love the fucking shit out of you!!

Oh, if anyone is already a TMI fan, please tell me.  Please.  I'm dying for people to chat with about it.  Really.

C. Toying with a few fanfiction ideas.  It's been a long time since I've written fanfiction and I'm a slow writer by nature, but I have several ideas bouncing around in my head right now- Twilight related, of course- that just might see the light of day eventually.  ...If I ever get my ass moving, that is.  Am also considering trying my hand at writing Twilight drabbles, as a writing exercise.  Not sure, though.  If that happens, I will probably make a post up here asking for a few small prompts.  Maybe.

D.  Finally got myself a copy of BD, from Barnes and Noble (which is a 45 minute drive, btw).  Of course, I paid $22 for the hardcover, then went to Wal-Mart a few days later only to discover they've restocked all of the books, with BD only costing $15.  I'm only slightly bitter.  Really.

E.  Being miserable due to a small mystery issue with the vertebrae of my neck and back.  Have seen a doctor, had my neck/back chiropracted and manipulated, and am still suffering just a little.  But I have pain killers now, so it's not as bad as it was.

F.   Being unnecessarily excited about my birthday next week.  Unnecessarily, because my birthday is typically a total bust.  I'm sure I'll be disappointed this year like always, but I'm excited nonetheless.  19, woo!

Um, and yeah.  That's pretty much it.  Sorry I haven't been around.  I'll try to find more things to post about so I can get my ass back on the map.  =P

Also, I'm always on Yahoo messenger, and usually on AIM, so if anyone wants to chat about fandom or whatever, let me know.  =]  I'd be glad to talk.  ^^

So, yep.  I'll try to be around.  =D  <333 all.

...and simply haven't had anything Twilight-related to talk about recently. And so, we shall have something HP related for a change, and also because I feel like I should post something. =P

Thus: the Sorting Hat quiz that's been making its rounds in fandom:

Your result for The Sorting Hat Test...

Slytherin

You scored 32% Order/Chaos, and 28% Moral/Rational

Chaotic Rationality. You don't think much of rules and restrictions; you look at things from an analytical perspective and probably think morality is relative to some extent. Your strength lies in being able to make your own judgments and form your own strategies uninhibited by others; your weakness lies in the wariness other people may have of you, perceiving you as dangerous.

You join people like Theodore Nott, Severus Snape, and Horace Slughorn.

The 4-grid I used to determine this is as follows:

RationalSlytherinRavenclaw

So, I decided to go on yet another endeavor to secure my own copy of Breaking Dawn via Wal-Mart.

Note: This is the most epic fail I have ever written about, by the way.

SO.  I go into Wal-Mart and head straight to the book section.  I was full expecting another ginormous display of at least one of the books and was, instinctively, bracing myself for the barrage.

Apparently my Twi-luck has run out and Wal-Mart had more or less given up on catering to Meyer's fans.  There were, perhaps, four copies of New Moon shoved up in the corner of the top shelf.  After about ten minutes of frantic searching, I discovered two copies of generic!movie!poster!Twilighter hiding behind a Dean Koontz book.  There were also two copies of the Twi-soundtrack about a foot below the NM copies, as well.

And that's all.  Nothing else.

Oh!  Well, that's a lie.  There were about four copies of The Host, too, but I'm so not counting that right now.

Four copies of New Moon.  Two of Twilight.  *DIE*  And this is after their monstrous, overwhelming New Moon display from last time.  Wtf happened?!  No.  Fucking.  Words.

*breathe*

Anyway, I did buy a LightWedge Mini Book Light.  It's rather adorable, and I couldn't resist having one of my own.  =]  No reason to use it this early in the day, but it seems like it'll do a good job.

ETA: Er... I only paid $6.88 for mine.  No clue about that ridiculous $14 something.  Psht.

14. What is the ONE thing you thought you would not do, but did, in 2008?

I absolutely love that grocery stores play music while you shop.  It's not something I've ever thought a whole lot about before, but while out doing the grocery shopping with my father today, I realized just how grateful I am for the lull of music in the background during this boring (imho) task.  It's almost like having your own personal soundtrack while going through a motion of every day life.  Sometimes they'll be playing a ballad about heartbreak while you're torn between buying a name-brand that you love and the generic store imitation, other times they'll be playing an upbeat ode to life just when you've found a brilliant bargain that you simply can't pass up.  It's very refreshing and relieving, at least for me.  Shopping for groceries in general is a painstaking task for me, and I'm glad the store has thought enough about its customers, and me, to turn the radio on.

However, this wouldn't be a good epiphany without throwing in some Twilight, would it?

As much as I'm glad the chore of finding food to feed the family for two weeks wasn't as boring as it could have been, I can't help but wish that I had the pleasure of completing the task with a fellow Twilighter by my side.  I probably should have been focusing solely on making sure we found everything on my mother's list (lest she throw a colossal fit when we got home), but it was hard to concentrate with our local Bi-Lo throwing a barrage of 50's and 80's music my way- inevitably making me think of Edward (music in the 50's was good... the 80's were bearable =] ).  And because I ended up thinking of Edward, I also ended up trying to make the songs I was hearing conform to a Twilight theme in my mind, and...  er... my point is, it would have been nice to have a Twilighter beside me in place of my father, so that I could elbow them carelessly in the ribs and shout "EDWARD AND BELLA, AMIRITE?!" and gesture embarrassingly torwards the ceiling in hopes that we were sharing the same brainwaves.  =D  Of course, there were still a few moments when I nearly blurted out those exact words anyway- I could literally feel them on the tip of my tongue- but I refrained, thankfully.  Somehow I don't think my father would have ever let me live it down if I'd given into my own urges.  =P

On a side note to that: I don't know what sort of music my flisters listen to, generally, but has anyone given any thought to what sort of music Edward might have specifically liked from the 50's and 80's?  I'm a huge fan of both music eras, so I have a couple ideas.  Crooners such as Bobby Darin (<3) and Dean Martin (<3), and Ol' Blue Eyes (<3), come to mind immediately for me.  The 80's are a little more difficult, considering the range of styles present in that decade, and perhaps I'm too hung up on Growing Up Cullen!Edward, but I can't seem to erase this mental image of Edward listening to The Cure and creating techno-pop on an electric keyboard.  XD  I'll bet you five dollars that Edward had an oh-so-secret Cindy Lauper album (or two?) that Emmett won't let him live down.  =D

On a somewhat different note, I decided today that I was going to read Twilightguy's journey through the Twilight Saga.  I'm already onto his NM commentary.  I'm kind of enchanted by Twilightguy, to be honest.  He went into the series with the intention of proving/disproving rumors, miconceptions, and stereotypes concerning the novels, with his unique male perspective- unique because Twilight fans are, predominantely, female as a whole.  Normally we female fans are under the misconception that most real life men are envious and resentful toward the series for giving us girls Edward- the epitome of perfection that all girls look for in their search for the man of their dreams.  After all, how can mere mortal men ever hope to compare to Edward?  But Twilightguy doesn't see it that way, not so much, as I never have (no more than as a cliché joke, rather), and I appreciate his ability to look beyond that and give Edward's character the credit it deserves.  I'm also jealous that Twilightguy has the ability to express so eloquently what I've been trying to express all along in my defense of Edward.

To quote Twilightguy:

"There are many things that us less-than-Hellenisticly-perfect guys can take from the book by watching Edward: the respect he shows towards women, the selflessness of his actions, the level of polite elegance he maintains, the maturity of his judgment, among many others. These are all things that real guys can actually learn from him– and they don’t have to be vampires to do it, either."

Amen, Twilightguy; amen.

Anywho, I recommend Twilightguy's commentary.  Entertaining and refreshing.  =]

And... I think I'm done.  Longest post ever, right?  =D

Not a whole lot going on lately.  =/  Finished Eclipse finally, reread Midnight Sun (giggling intermittently), considered taking a nap but decided against it...  Typical day.  I just felt like I shouldn't let today pass without posting something or other, even if it's worthless.

Um... Oh.

My Somehow-Makes-Me-Think-of-Twilight song of the moment is "Beautiful Mess" by Jason Mraz, fyi.

Yes, this kind of means that the Fanmix idea is still a go.  Currently working my way through scores of songs, trying to find some rhyme or reason to what strikes my fancy.  Still haven't decided how I'm going to fit themes to these possible fanmixes.  =/

Btw, is anyone else reading/following Dark Side of the Moon by blondie?
I highly recommend it.  It's New Moon from Edward's point of view.  =]  Very well written.
